A place to begin

You do not need the right words before you reach out.

Sometimes you know exactly what you want help with. Sometimes you only know that something feels harder than it used to. Both are valid places to start.

Therapy gives you room to slow down, make sense of what is happening, and decide what you want to do next without having to perform or arrive with a polished explanation.

The same thoughts or worries keep circling.

Stress at home, work, or school feels difficult to carry alone.

A relationship, loss, or life change has shifted your footing.

You want a private place to understand patterns and move forward.

How care feels

Conversation first. Practical tools when they help.

Counseling at VMBH is built around a clinician who works at your pace. There is room to think out loud, notice what matters, and identify practical tools you can use between sessions.

  • Start with what feels most important today
  • Ask questions and name what is not working
  • Build useful next steps together

A clearer first step

What your first session can look like

You are not expected to tell your whole story at once. The goal is to begin a useful conversation and understand what support may fit.

Before

Start with a simple call

Ask about current availability and whether VMBH accepts your insurance plan. You can keep the first conversation brief.

During

Begin where you feel comfortable

Your one-hour session gives you space to talk about what brought you in. The exact flow can vary by clinician and by what you need that day.

After

Talk through the next step

You and your clinician can discuss what may be helpful next and whether continuing together feels like a good fit.

How it works

  1. Request an appointment or call

Send a short request online, or pick up the phone. The request asks only for your name, email, phone, the best time to reach you and the service you want.

  2. We call you back

We'll call you back the same business day. If you reach us after 4pm or on a Sunday, we'll call the next morning we're open.

  3. Your first session

A 60-minute session with Nkemdilim Okonkwo, in Bowie or by telehealth. Start with whatever brought you in. You do not need the right words first.

Questions are welcome

Before you make the call

Here are the questions people often have when they are considering therapy for the first time or returning after a break.

Ask us directly

Getting started

Do I need to know exactly what I want to work on?

No. Some people arrive with a clear concern, while others only know that life feels harder than it used to. You can start with what you know now.

What happens at the first appointment?

The first appointment is a one-hour conversation. You can share what brought you in, ask questions, and talk with your clinician about what may be useful. The exact flow varies by clinician and by your needs.

Can I meet in person or by telehealth?

Both are available. You can meet in person at the Bowie office or by telehealth, and you can switch between the two as life requires.

How long is each therapy session?

Therapy and counseling sessions run for one hour.

Is therapy confidential?

Therapy is private, with specific limits required by law and safety obligations. Your clinician will explain those limits and answer your questions.

What if I am not sure it is the right fit?

It is reasonable to ask questions and pay attention to whether you feel heard and respected. You can discuss fit and next steps directly with your clinician.

Can I email private health details?

Please do not send sensitive health information by regular email. Call the office so staff can guide you to the appropriate next step.
